Picosecond Laser Tattoo Removal

Picosecond Laser (Picolaser) for Tattoo Removal in Bangkok, Thailand

Tattoo removal is considered one of the more challenging skin treatments, as only a few types of lasers can effectively break down tattoo pigments—most notably the Picosecond Laser (Picolaser) and the Q-Switched Laser. At Mingkwan Clinic in Bangkok, Thailand, we offer tattoo removal using the Picosecond Laser, which features multiple modes tailored to target a wide range of tattoo ink colors. In this article, we’ll explore how the Picosecond Laser works for tattoo removal, how many sessions are typically needed, and what kind of results you can expect.

What is the Picosecond Laser (Picolaser)?

The Picosecond Laser (Picolaser) is a laser technology designed to remove tattoos and abnormal pigmentation in the skin. It emits energy in picoseconds (one trillionth of a second), breaking down pigment particles into tiny fragments. This allows the body to eliminate them more quickly and effectively.

How Does the Picosecond Laser Work for Tattoo Removal?

The Picosecond Laser operates by emitting ultra-short pulses of high-intensity light that penetrate deep into the skin and shatter tattoo ink particles without damaging the surrounding tissue. This mechanism differs from the traditional Q-Switched Laser, which uses longer pulses and may lead to more side effects.

Advantages of Picosecond Laser (Picolaser) for Tattoo Removal

  • Faster tattoo removal: Requires fewer sessions compared to Q-Switched Laser. For example, if Q-Switched Laser takes 10–11 sessions, Picosecond Laser may only need 7–8 sessions.
  • Lower risk of scarring: Due to the ultra-short pulse duration, it reduces heat buildup in the skin.
  • Less pain: Studies have shown that Picosecond Laser causes less pain than Q-Switched Laser.
  • Effective for multi-colored tattoos: Can remove blue, green, and red ink—colors that are often difficult to treat with Q-Switched Laser.
  • Fewer side effects: There is a lower chance of redness, swelling, or irritation compared to traditional lasers.

What Types of Tattoos Are Suitable for Picosecond Laser?

  • Those who want to completely remove or fade a permanent tattoo.
  • Individuals who previously used Q-Switched Laser but were unsatisfied with the results.
  • Those with tattoos using multiple or very dark ink colors.
  • People with sensitive skin who prefer a method with lower risk of side effects.

What Tattoo Ink Colors Can Be Treated?

At Mingkwan Clinic, we use a Picosecond Laser with wavelengths of 532, 595, 660, and 1064 nm, which allows us to effectively treat a wide range of ink colors:
  • Black / Brown / Dark Blue: 1064 nm wavelength
  • Red / Orange: 532 nm wavelength
  • Light Blue: 595 nm wavelength
  • Green: 660 nm wavelength
*** For red ink: some tattoo artists use pigments containing iron oxide, which may darken when treated with laser. Please consult a doctor before treatment. ***

How Many Sessions Are Needed to See Results?

The number of sessions required depends on the size, color, and depth of the tattoo ink. Typically, 3–8 sessions are needed, spaced 6–8 weeks apart.

Does Picosecond Laser Tattoo Removal Hurt?

It may feel like a rubber band snapping on the skin or a warm sensation under the skin. However, topical anesthetic can be used to minimize discomfort. At Mingkwan Clinic, we use numbing cream and a cooling air device during the procedure, making the treatment very tolerable with minimal pain.

Steps for Picosecond Laser Tattoo Removal

  • Consultation with a doctor before treatment.
  • Clean the tattooed area to be treated.
  • Apply numbing cream for about 30–60 minutes, then wipe it off.
  • Perform the treatment using a Picosecond Laser.

Aftercare Following Picosecond Laser Tattoo Removal

  • Apply antiseptic ointment to the treated area for at least 3 days.
  • Avoid using cosmetics or topical products that contain AHA, BHA, Retinol, Vitamin A derivatives, or acne medications for at least 1 week.
  • Use a moisturizer and sunscreen on the treated area to prevent dryness, inflammation, and hyperpigmentation after the laser.
  • Avoid exposing the treated area to sunlight. Use UV-protective clothing or a hat if needed.
  • Avoid scratching or picking at the treated skin.

Expected Results After Tattoo Removal

Results depend on several factors, such as:

  • Ink color: Black or dark blue tattoos usually respond best. Other colors may not respond as effectively.
  • Ink density: Heavily pigmented tattoos may require more sessions than lightly pigmented ones.
  • Ink type: Some ink types may not respond well to laser, and those containing iron oxide may darken after the first treatment (though the tattoo will lighten with subsequent sessions).
  • Location of the tattoo: Tattoos on the face tend to respond better to treatment, while tattoos on areas like the wrist or ankle may require more sessions.

Possible Side Effects from Laser Tattoo Removal

Although rare, the following side effects may occur:

  • Blistering in the treated area
  • Post-treatment hyperpigmentation
  • Hypopigmentation or white patches at the treatment site
  • Scarring after treatment
